Keen golfer George Roberts reckons the elusive goal of the “hole in one” is a bit like buses – you don’t see one for ages then three come along together.

He has been golfing for more than 30 years without seeing one, but in the last year managed two at Douglas Park – where he’s been a member since 1987.

Then the 67-year-old managed an incredible third one while playing at the Senior Open competition in Tayport.

And as well as having the honour of pulling off such a fabulous shot he learned – to his delight – that it had also won him a fabulous and exclusive Boss watch.

George scored his ace on the 176-yard, par-three third at Douglas Park GC, and the 13-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive Boss Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

He said: “I was playing in the senior open competition with two visiting members I’d never met before.

“They seemed even more delighted with my three-wood hole-in-one than I was – one even grabbed me and lifted me high into the air.”

Now, in accordance with tradition, he aims to treat other club members to a whisky to toast his success
