But it’s also important to think about personal safety when you’re out and about.

Security experts at Yale have compiled a list of their top advice to help keep you safe while you are enjoying the fun and festivities.

You’re cards have been written, the decorations are down from the loft and you’re inundated with invitations - drinks with friends, your work Christmas party, shopping trips and family get-togethers.

Most of us like to have a drink or two but don’t let alcohol cloud your judgement and compromise your safety.

On a night out, don’t leave drinks unattended and cover your glass when walking around.

Always think ahead and plan your journey home before you go out. If travelling via public transport, always check the timetables and if using a taxi, make sure you book through a reputable company.

If you’re in a position where walking home is unavoidable always stick to well-lit areas and consider carrying a personal alarm.

Hannah Adkins, of Yale, said: “Christmas should be about enjoying yourselves and spending time with loved ones.

“Unfortunately, however, crime increases as criminals take advantage of the darker evenings and vulnerable individuals walking home alone.”
