A guide for getting out and about for disabled people

Residents are invited to get up-to-date information about disabled access to venues throughout East Dunbartonshire by going along to a special consultation event.

DisabledGo, the UK’s leading provider of access information, have produced the guide.

They are committed to providing disabled people with the information they need to make informed choices and break down the barriers they face accessing education, local services and employment.

The DisabledGo website - www.disabledgo.com - is a one stop shop of up-to-date information on the accessibility of over 1,000 public venues, including council offices, libraries, shops, hotels, leisure centres and clubs, to disabled users throughout East Dunbartonshire. This information is totally free thanks to support from East Dunbartonshire Council.

There will be demonstrations of the current access guides at the event on Tuesday, July 28 at The Park Centre, Kirkintilloch at 10.30am. This year 100 venues were added and residents can suggest venues they would like to see added to the guide.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: “We embrace partnership working and are delighted to be working with Disabled Go again this year to produce this updated guide to facilities in East Dunbartonshire.

“Our recently published equality outcomes for East Dunbartonshire highlight our commitment to advancing equality of opportunity for everyone in our communities.

“East Dunbartonshire has a balanced mix of urban and rural areas. This guide provides a comprehensive reference point for those wishing to check access information before venturing out to enjoy our local landmarks, town centres and public spaces.

“Having experienced first-hand the difficulties and barriers out there for those with accessibility or mobility problems, this is an excellent source of information which restores an element of choice for people.

“I hope that those who use this guide find it useful and can enjoy travelling to and around East Dunbartonshire. I would encourage residents to come along to the consultation event and let us know their thoughts.”

Light refreshments will also be provided at the event, which will take place at The Park Centre, 45 Kerr Street, Kirkintilloch.
