Free WiFi on offer at community centres

Free wireless internet access will be on offer at community centres across Glasgow later this year after an agreement between the city council and British Telecom.

Users will be able to surf the net at 31 centres and public halls run by Glasgow Life.

WiFi will be free for the first six months, and after that, there will free access for 
30 minutes per day per handset.

Access to some sites, including Glasgow City Council’s website, will remain free permanently.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “This is yet more fantastic news for Glasgow, this time for users of community centres.

“My administration is committed to extending a network of free WiFi across the whole city, making Glasgow even more digitally literate and connected.”

Brendan Dick, a director with BT Scotland, said: “The massive rise in the use of smartphones and tablets means people want to get online wherever they are.”

The agreement comes weeks after it was announced Glasgow had become the first city in Scotland to be awarded an urban wireless programme, operated by BT, in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Free WiFi is already on offer at some train stations, including Glasgow Queen Street and Dalmarnock. Glasgow Central is to get it soon.
