Festive campaign gets underway across the district

The month-long campaign will focus on three main areas - safer roads, shop safe and party safe.

Chief Inspector Rob Hay, area commander for East Dunbartonshire, said: “We are committed to reducing casualties on our roads and despite the general perception that drink/drug driving is socially unacceptable, many drivers continue to do so.

“Officers will be carrying out high visibility road patrols and static road checks to detect offenders.

“There is often much confusion out there about limits, so the message is clear - if you’re not sure then don’t drive.”

He added: “Although on-line shopping has increased greatly in recent times, the ‘high street’ areas of East Dunbartonshire remain busier at this time of year and local officers will be carrying out additional patrols in the main shopping areas.

“When out and about people should remember to look after bags and valuables, do not withdraw more money than you need, put money in your wallet or bag before leaving cash machines, hide your PIN number and don’t leave gifts in cars.”

Meanwhile, police are working with East Dunbartonshire Council and licensed premises to ensure that people can enjoy themselves in safe, social environments, promoting safer drinking and dealing with anti-social behaviour.

They have issued the following advice:

nPlan ahead for your night out

nStay together – look out for friends

nWatch your drinks and how much you drink

nKeep bags and valuables with you at all times

nMake sure your phone is charged, you have money to get home and look after your keys

nUse a licensed taxi, public transport or arrange a lift
