Residents at Lennoxtown hit out after more flooding misery

Angry residents at Lennoxtown have hit out at authorities after more floods in the area over the weekend.

The area suffered once again after heavy rain fell on Saturday night (Sep 12).

Parts affected included Millburn Street, where gardens were under water after a nearby burn burst its banks.

People affected have blamed authorities for a lack of maintenance.

One woman posted on Facebook: “The burn flooded because the grate at the culvert hasn’t been cleared!”

She added: “I phoned the council at 7.20am this morning (Sunday, Sep 13) and they appeared at 10am with sandbags. Waste of time.”

East Dunbartonshire Council said yesterday afternoon (Monday, September 14) it would continue to look at measures to mitigate the problem.

Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive - Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets, said: “Investigations into the cause of flooding and possible remediation works in this area were being carried out by the Council earlier this year but were delayed by Covid- 19.

“However, last week trees were cut back to minimise blockages at the trash screen, which can exacerbate flooding. Despite this, the extreme nature of the weekend weather caused a further incident when an open section of the burn in the

park area at Bencloich Road and the rear of Millburn Street flooded.

“This resulted in several gardens being under water. Fortunately none of the houses suffered internal flooding.

“We will continue our investigations and liaise with residents to look at possible mitigation measures for the future.”
