Falklands hero plaque dumped in the Allander

An angry Bearsden walker has hit out at the destruction of a memorial to a war hero from the Falklands conflict.

The bridge over the Allander Water at Bardowie was constructed by 583 Explosive Ordnance Squadron, Royal Engineers (Volunteers) in 1990.

It was built in memory of bomb disposal expert Staff Sergeant Jim Prescott (49 Squadron Royal Engineers), who died trying to defuse a 1000lb bomb. He was posthumously awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.

Walker Keith Eynon was appalled when he saw the plaque in the river.

He added that this was not the first time the plaque had been targeted. Indeed, the original plaque was stolen in 2013 and had to be replaced.

He said: “I have just returned from a walk along the Allander river and was appalled to find that the plaque commemorating Sgt Prescott has again been defiled.

“The marble plaque has been torn from its plinth and dumped in the river .

“What a senseless piece of destruction of a memorial to someone who gave his life in an attempt to save others.”

East Dunbartonshire Council told the Herald it would inspect the site as soon as possible.

Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive - Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, added: “We are very sorry to hear of this heartless act of vandalism and will inspect the site as soon as possible.

“We would encourage anyone with information about the crime to contact Police Scotland.”
