The Sunday Times Best Places to Live is a list of eight locations across Scotland chosen by the newspaper. They represent best of Britain in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

The study includes a description from the guide’s judges explaining what makes the chosen town or neighbourhood such a special place to live and a breakdown of the average cost of houses and rent in that area.

From this, judges named Bearsden among the best.

They said: “Glasgow’s premier suburb of Bearsden has shown it has more strings to its bow than big houses, good exam results and a 20-minute train journey to the city centre.

“The surrounding countryside has been a godsend during lockdown, whether it’s walking the dog in the hills or riding a bike around picturesque Kilmardinny Loch."

North Berwick in East Lothian was hailed as the best place to live in Scotland, according to the 2021 guide because of its heavenly beaches, jaw-dropping views and secondary school and lively high street. The other locations are not ranked, but listed in alphabetical order.

Helen Davies, The Sunday Times Property Editor, said: “This guide has never been so important. The pandemic has taught us just how much we rely on our homes, our communities and our surroundings. With working from home now common, it’s no surprise that many of us are reassessing our priorities and thinking hard about where we really want to live.

“Our focus for this year has been community, countryside and convenience. It hasn’t been a year for big cities or small villages. Instead, it is small towns that have shone: big enough to have everything you need within walking distance and small enough for everyone to feel connected.”

The Sunday Times editorial added: “Some might accuse Bearsden of being snobby, but that would be to misunderstand it. It’s a place that knows exactly what it is and wants to keep it that way.”

"Poet Edwin Morgan, former Scotland football team boss Alex McLeish and Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos have all called the suburb home.”
