East Dunbartonshire has scooped four of the top ten spots in a survey of the most desirable places to live and work in Scotland.
Torrance, Lenzie/Kirkintilloch, Milngavie and Bearsden came in at numbers two, three, four and six in the Royal Mail survey, with East Dunbartonshire achieving more satisfaction than any other local authority area in the country.
The outer city suburbs feature heavily in the Scottish top ten thanks to the affordable cost of living, lower levels of crime and better schools – compared to the city centre – as well as lower commute times. The top spot in Scotland went to 12th century former industrial town, Neilston in East Renfrewshire.
The study, by the Centre for Economic and Business Research (Cebr), calculated the most desirable areas based on a range of factors including good schools, access to green spaces, good employment prospects, affordable housing and average commuting times.
Steve Rooney, head of Royal Mail’s address management unit, said: “Royal Mail delivers to the UK’s 29 million addresses, six days a week, connecting communities and businesses. Our study provides unique insight into the most desirable places to live and work in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, through the lens of the postcode.”
Councillor Rhondda Geekie, leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “I am delighted with the results of the work/life study by the Centre for Economic and Business Research - which appraised quality of education, green spaces, job prospects, affordable housing and commuting times.
“It is independent evidence that East Dunbartonshire is a wonderful place to live, work and enjoy recreational activities.
“East Dunbartonshire Council is working hard to ensure our town centres, villages and communities continue to survive and thrive. Despite ongoing economic challenges we are determined to continue the good work.
“Having four areas in the top 10 for Scotland is excellent news – covering almost the whole of East Dunbartonshire, including Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Torrance and Lenzie.
“It’s a real vote of confidence in what we are doing as a local authority, in conjunction with a range of partners in the public and private sector.
“However, no-one is resting on their laurels – we have a number of improvement programmes and projects underway, focused on areas such as local schools, the economy, biodiversity, housing and the roads network.”
