A proposal to allow houses to be built on greenbelt land in Milngavie has been met with strong opposition from local residents.

East Dunbartonshire Council is in the process of preparing a new Local Development Plan (LDP) for the area, which will replace the Local Plan 2.

One of the suggestions is for housing or a commercial development to be allowed to be built at Dougalston Golf Course - which is attached to Virgin Active Health and Leisure Club.

There is a historic B listed dovecote on the site, which is the last remaining feature of the old Dougalston Estate.

The LDP will guide the future use of land, set out proposals for development and provide the framework for dealing with planning applications. It is expected to be adopted in 2016 and will be updated every five years thereafter.

The initial stage is to find out whether it would be acceptable to allow any sort of development at this site and members of the public have until 5pm on June 20 to comment.

A resident from nearby Dougalston Crescent said: “My main concern is that any development there would destroy an area of outstanding natural beauty and a very important wildlife habitat.

“It would completely change the whole character of this side of Milngavie, which is essentially greenbelt.

“Many people have a sentimental attachment to the area and the dovecote.

“It was always meant to be surrounded by open landscape - not housing.”

Councillor Alan Moir, convener of the council’s development and regeneration committee, said: “This is an important additional opportunity for stakeholders to shape the forthcoming LDP, due for publication in April 2015.

“It should be noted that these additional sites are not being promoted by the council. As they have been submitted by landowners and developers for consideration the council is duty bound to make them public and seek the views of the public.”
