Club hits out as vandals trash rugby ground at Milngavie

Gangs of youths have been causing havoc at West of Scotland Rugby Club at Milngavie.

Craig Simpson told the Herald that in the latest incident on Tuesday night, the club was “trashed yet again, costing thousands to fix.”

The callous vandals broke up the facilities in the ground, knocking down barriers, smashing a shelter and wrecking chairs.

Craig said the club has been targeted for a number of years now and can no longer simply stand by and say nothing.

He added: “The youths in question frequently attend at the club and as such end up destroying the facilities.

“They are local to the area and as such parents should be aware of their whereabouts when going out....on lockdown at night?”

He continued: “It is extremely frustrating. However, we as a club can no longer simply stand by and say nothing.

“For a number of years now groups of youths have been trespassing on facilities late at night and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

“As you can see from the photos, these are mindless acts of vandalism, which not only cost the club hundreds of pounds to fix, but often result in wider safety concerns for those utilising our facilities the days proceeding these actions.

“To make matters worse, much of the damage in the pictures was caused when we are all still meant to be in lockdown.

“We as a club, pride ourselves on being a hub within the community, providing a space for our members, visiting teams and those external clubs that utilise our facilities, to feel safe while enjoying their respective sports.

“It is massively disappointing to see members of our own local community treat our facilities in this way.

“We as a club will now be exploring ways to further prevent this from happening, as our current efforts are proving futile.

“We urge anyone who may have information surrounding those responsible or who witness any unwarranted visitors on our grounds to report this to us and the local police ASAP.”
