AN investigation is underway after two firearms were found in Milngavie.
Police were alerted after the guns were discovered hidden in undergrowth near Dowan Road.
Officers said they don’t know why the weapons were placed there or what they might be used for - and have appealed to the public for help.
The guns were uncovered last week and are described as a German manufactured bolt action Anschutz model 1417 rifle and a German Krico model 260 rifle.
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: “Acting on information received, the police recovered two rifles found in undergrowth in the Dowan Road area and are appealing for any information concerning ownership or origins of these firearms.
“Strathclyde Police has no information to suggest that the weapons have been or were intended for use in any criminal act, however it is important that the circumstances surrounding the recovery are fully investigated.”
DI Alan Hunter at Maryhill CID said: “Recovering firearms of this sort is relatively rare, as is their use in crime.
“They could have been used for sport, for poaching or could have been in the hands of criminals and so it is important to establish if anyone has information about these particular weapons.
“I would appeal to anyone who can assist to come forward and speak to the police.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Maryhill police office on 0141 532 3700. Alternatively calls can be made anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
