Parents and carers of the pupils were sent text alerts from the council to alert them of the outbreak.

The advice from health experts is for people to wait 48 hours after symptoms disappear before returning to school or work.

The school was due to be deep-cleaned last night (Wednesday) to prevent the infection spreading and was expected to open as normal today (Thursday).

East Dunbartonshire Council director of education and children’s services, Gordon Currie, said: “There has been an outbreak of the norovirus at Clober Primary School in Milngavie and 56 pupils were off school today with norovirus symptoms.

“A text alert has been sent to parents/carers to advise them of the outbreak and that if their child exhibits any symptoms they are to be kept at home for 48 hours.

“We have been in contact with NHS Public Health and as per their advice we are conducting a deep clean of the school building this evening.”
