LOCAL choirs are going to welcome the Olympic torch with a special song when it comes to Bearsden on Saturday, June 9.
Young and old singers across East Dunbartonshire have been working together to develop inspiring words, lyrics, sounds and a song demo for the ‘Relay of Sound Community Choir Project’ funded by Creative Scotland’s Summer of Song fund and East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust arts development programme.
A song demo created by youth attending Milngavie Youth Cafe called ‘More than an athlete’ was chosen and passed on to the Music School of Douglas Academy where pupils were set a challenge to arrange a score for a cappella choir arrangement.
A judging panel including the music school composition/head staff, Westerton Male Voice Choir director with supporting input from the tutors involved with the project voted for the piece on May 17.
Council leader, Councillor Rhondda Geekie, said: “This is an exceptional piece of musical history and will be remembered long after the Olympic torch has travelled through Bearsden. ”
The winning arrangement and score has been passed on to its final leg of the project to be rehearsed in Westerton Church on Wednesday (yesterday), at Kilmardinny Arts Centre today (Thursday) and Cairns Church Hall on Monday.
The final performance will take place on Saturday morning, June 9, outside Brookwood Library.
