Celebratin women in Engineering Week

To help celebrate National Women in Engineering Day recently, young women throughout East Dunbartonshire have been invited to a taster event at Turnbull High School to meet engineers.

Senior phase female pupils from Bearsden Academy, Bishopbriggs Academy, Boclair Academy and St Ninian’s High School joined pupils from Turnbull High School to attend this event organised by Principal Teacher of Wider Achievement, Jacqueline O’Kane and Civil Engineer from Tony Gee, Kirsty Jamieson.

The initiative was developed to raise the profile of women in engineering, with pupils taking part in 10 workshops delivered by 16 different engineers from various engineering disciplines – giving a greater insight to the broad range of job opportunities available in this field.

Convener of Education, Councillor Maureen Henry, said: “This event is a great example of how local businesses and schools can work together to help develop the young workforce of tomorrow.

“It gave those who attended the opportunity to sample the engineering profession and to ask questions of people working in the industry.

“Feedback from the young people who took part was extremely positive and I hope that this taster into engineering has encouraged those young women who have an interest in this career path to pursue it.”
