Book award high for Eastwood kids

Bookworms at Eastwood High made the journey to Edinburgh recently for a chance to meet some of their favourite authors.

Pupils had been brushing up on those shortlisted for the Scottish Childrens Book Awards in the months leading up to the event — and they were the only East Renfrewshire school lucky enough to be invited to the Assembly Rooms ceremony.

A group of eight youngsters were able to meet winners Ross Collins (Bookbug Readers 3-7), Alex McCall (Younger Readers 8-11) and Cathy MacPhail (Older Readers 12-16) and have their own copies signed.

Teacher Ann De’Ath told The Extra that all enjoyed the trip to meet their literary heroes, adding: “The group took part in a massive quiz and Maryan Shabbir (12) saw her book review on the big screen as part of the main presentation.”

But it wasn’t the end of the line for the young book lovers, as Mosi’s War author and award winner Cathy MacPhail paid a visit to Eastwood the following week.
