Bogus caller warning follows Linn Park theft

Around 7.30pm on Friday (April 26), an 87-year-old man answered the door to his Brentfield Avenue flat and spoke to a man who claimed there had been a road crash outside.

The elderly man allowed the suspect access to check in case of any electrical fault within the house – but when he left, the householder realised he was missing a three figure sum of money.

The bogus caller is described as white, aged 45-50, 5ft8 and of medium build, with dark hair and an unshaven face. He was wearing a dark coloured jumper and trousers at the time.

Detective inspector Tom McKean, of Cathcart police office, said: “I would urge anyone who has information on this suspect to contact us to prevent this person preying on other elderly victims.”

Police Scotland has urged southsiders to be careful of letting strangers into their homes, emphasising that turning someone away is not rude, as genuine callers will contact you again to make an appointment.

Ask the person’s identity before opening the door, use a chain if possible and never leave an open door unattended.

Ask for identification, and be cautious of distractions. If you are suspicious of a caller, contact the police as soon as possible.
