'˜Big in Japan' at Auld Kirk

The Auld Kirk Museum in Kirkintilloch is getting ready to take part in Scotland's annual Festival of Museums, an exciting nationwide programme of cultural events taking place from May 13-15.

This year’s theme is ‘Big in Japan’.

The Auld Kirk Museum will be telling the story of the ‘Mother of Japanese Whisky’, Rita Cowan from Kirkintilloch.

Members of the public are invited to join a spirited evening of talks, whisky tastings, and wood carving on Friday 13 May, 7pm to 9pm.

There will also be a family fun day on Saturday, May 14 from noon to 4pm with a display of Shotokan Karate by Zanshin Kai Scotland, origami and silk brush strokes, face painting as well the opportunity to dress-up in Kimono costumes.

You can also experience traditional Japan on Sunday, May 15 from 12noon to 4pm with Japanese songs performed by the ‘Sirens of Titan’ choir and Japanese dance from widely acclaimed singer and dancer, Yoshie Asano Campbell.

A real highlight of the weekend will undoubtedly be the Tea Ceremony hosted by Mio Shapley, a qualified master of the Urasenke Tea Ceremony.

The Festival of Museums is an annual event coordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland to showcase Scotland’s extensive cultural offering with over 80 day and night time events taking place across the country.
