A soldier from Bearsden has been awarded the Lord Lieutenants merit award for voluntary service in the Territorial Army at a ceremony in Glasgow City Chambers recently.

Alistair Thompson (27) was presented with his award by Glasgow Lord Provost Sadie Docherty which was followed by a reception.

The ex-Bearsden Academy pupil, joined the Territorial Army 10 years ago while still at school. While studying for his degree at Strathclyde university, he served in the 207th Artillery, Crow Road, Hyndland, Glasgow, taking on several rolls.

Once he gained his degree he volunteered for active service and a tour of Afghanistan, where he served along side his regular army colleagues. Alastair was nominated by his peers for his commitment to the service.

His mum Christine Thompson said: “As his mother I am extremely proud of his achievement and the selflessness he has shown which rarely gets rewarded.”
