GAELIC singer, Karen Matheson, is going to sing in Paisley Abbey on Thursday, October 25 as part of a new music and arts festival.

‘The Spree’ festival will run from October 25 to 28, and came from a desire to build on Paisley’s successful bid to host the Royal Mòd in 2013 and build a cultural legacy for the town.

Events will take place in four venues across the town including Gaelic workshops, comedy in association with The Stand Comedy Club, Fidil and Bard and the Karen Matheson Band plus special guest Dick Gaughan.

Karen Matheson (49), who now lives in the Bearsden Cross area, has stunned audiences around the world with her haunting voice and introduced the beautiful Gaelic language to thousands of people.

Widely recognised as the singer in Celtic super-group Capercaillie, she was given an OBE in the 2006 New Years Honours list, to add to her award of “Best Gaelic singer” from the inaugural Scottish folk awards.

Capercaillie has sold more than a million albums across the world, and performed in over 30 countries. In 1995 they wrote, recorded and starred in the blockbuster movie ‘Rob Roy’ when Karen performed a solo rendition of a Gaelic lament.

As a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various projects of collaboration including the award winning BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, where she recorded tracks with Emmylou Harris, The McGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith and Rufus Wainright.

Karen, who began performing as a child in her local village hall on the west coast of Scotland, said: “Paisley Abbey is an amazing place to sing both spiritually and for the sound, the aucoustics will be wonderful.

“The festival will be great for Paisley and brings lots of amazing talent together.”

Roddy Frame, Francois and the Atlas Mountains, Damien Dempsey and comedian Craig Hill are also in the festival line-up as well as a special addition on Sunday, October 28 - the Celtic Connections’ Danny Kyle Stage.
