Bearsden MSP Fiona is hoping for a sporting chance at Glasgow Games

A SPORTING MSP has applied to be a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Fiona McLeod is hoping to be one of the 15,000 people selected for the big event – between July 23 and August 3.

The search for volunteers was launched last week and more than 10,000 applications were received within hours.

Ms McLeod said: “I am very excited about the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow and have already completed my application to become a volunteer and booked my annual leave!

“Everyone who went to the Olympics and Paralympics in London agrees that the ‘Games Makers’ made their visit really special. They were helping the public, the athletes, giving directions and generally keeping the mood upbeat.

“I know that many Scots went to London to be part of that special atmosphere and I hope they will bring the same positivity to Glasgow in 2014.”

Volunteer participants will be expected to fulfil a number of specialist and non-specialist roles, including welcoming athletes at the airport or Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village, helping behind the scenes or directing people at venues.
