A TALENTED young musician has reached the finals of The Young Drummer of The Year competition.

Nick Georgiou (13), from Bearsden, will compete in the nationwide event after entering the online competition, along with 400 other hopefuls in the under 16 category.

The Bearsden Academy pupil submitted a two minute DVD solo performance in September and over the last couple of months the entries were whittled down to 40 finalists.

He said: “Reaching the final has come as a huge surprise as I was already delighted to have made it through to the top 40 list.

“This will be a great experience and can be compared to when I played in front of a huge crowd at the O2 in London”

The youngster played at the 02 in London after winning the rock category at the Live & Unsigned music event last year with his band Wee Band.

He has been a member of Loud n Proud rock school in Paisley for the past two years.

Dad George said: “Getting to the final of The Young Drummer of The Year is a real achievement. The shortlist is reduced further to 10 who are all going to perform at the finals in Lemmington Spa at the beginning of February next year.” And he added: “Nick has been playing drums for four years now and is dead keen. He uses Mapex drums with a Pearl snare for gigs & studio rehearsals in addition to a Roland V drums at home.”

The young drummer said his formative influence came is Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

His band has been gigging regularly at a variety of venues and events throughout the county, including hotels, pubs, clubs, rock festivals and even busking in the city centre.
