Residents have welcomed the decision to reject an appeal by Cala Homes for permission to build homes in an ancient woodland.

Cala Homes submitted a planning application last September to build 34 houses in Craigton Woods, in Milngavie, but it was refused by East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board in May this year.

Mains Estate Residents Association (MERA) campaigned against the proposal which they argued would ruin the greenbelt area and prevent people from using it for recreation and walks.

The woods are also a local nature conservation site, an important wildlife corridor with historic gardens and a designed landscape. There are also tree preservation orders in place.

Mains Estate Residents’ Association (MERA) chairperson Rona Hooper said: “We spent many hours reading Cala’s reports and submissions, and in our opinion, found many flaws in the proposals.

“MERA feel this is the right decision as the application went against the current Local Development Plan and the proposed new LDP.

“We are delighted that following a visit by the Scottish Reporter that common sense has prevailed and that this valuable wildlife corridor has been protected.”

A spokesperson for CALA Homes (West), said: “We are disappointed that our appeal was rejected as the development was sustainable and would have provided much-needed affordable housing in the area.”

Milngavie Councillor Eric Gotts, said: “I’m very relieved that the reporter has once again found in favour of the council and rejected this appeal. If this appeal had been upheld, then these well loved woods would have been decimated to accommodate the housing development.

“The owners should work with the local community to ensure that the woods are properly managed after many years of neglect.

“The woods are a sanctuary for a whole range of flora and fauna which would be lost forever if a housing development was granted.”
