On Saturday, April 2, Lennoxtown Project Group teamed up with local residents to pick litter from Church View Court, High Church Cemetery, Main Street, and the Strathkelvin Railway Path.

A total of 28 people took part, collecting enough rubbish to fill 32 bin bags.

Some of the stranger items they disposed of included a potty chair, a dead trout and a pair of pink knickers.

‘Campsie’s Big Spring Clean’ was such a success, that there are plans to make it an annual event.

Margaret McArthur, a member of Lennoxtown Project Group, organised the litter pick as part of the nationwide ‘Clean Up Scotland’ campaign, which is run by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Commenting after the event, Margaret said: “We’re delighted to have been able to make a real difference to Lennoxtown.

“Not only did it leave us all with a great feeling of satisfaction that we were able to help our community, but it was great fun.

“The eight children who took part in the clean up deserve a great deal of praise. It was lovely to see little ones, as young as two, coming and getting stuck in with the grown-ups. They are an example to us all.

“Everyone has worked exceptionally hard and we want to see our beautiful village stay clean and tidy. We want Lennoxtown’s litterers to change their behaviour.”

Participants were treated to a free goody bag containing samples from local businesses including Kincaid Kandles, The Wee Soap Store, Claire Campbell Confectionery, Café Barga, and Next.

The local Cooperative store donated refreshments for the day, as did Highland Spring and Greggs.

Lennoxtown Project Group’s chair, Audrey Langslow, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of all the local businesses who did their bit to support us.

“We were very keen to reward our hard workers, and a goody bag was the perfect way to do that, whilst promoting the small independent sellers in our community at the same time.

“We want to thank everyone who took part in the clean up. Whether you helped to fill a bin bag, or a goody bag, your contribution is applaudable.”

Derek Robertson, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Lennoxtown Project Group and the local residents who took part in this clean up are to be commended for the difference they have made to Lennoxtown. They take great pride in their surroundings and people like them are the foundation of our Clean Up Scotland campaign.”
