The Prime Minister and the Duke of York are just two of the many supporters of Small Business Saturday – an
initiative to boost local
independent businesses.

Small Business Saturday takes place on December 6 throughout the UK and encourages shoppers to explore and support their local independent retailers.

The Milngavie and Bearsden Herald and its publishers, Johnston Press, are backing this event.

This week Small Business Saturday is travelling around the nation on a blue and white bus to promote the event.

The tour started in Leeds and will travel to 14 destinations including Edinburgh.

Rachel Doyle from Swirly Twirly Sweets, one of the Small Businesses taking part in Small Business Saturday this year has noted the benefits, stating “it’s good for shoppers to see what local businesses are in the area and it’s great for small businesses to support each other.”

The Duke of York showed his support by Tweeting ‘@SmallBizSatUK Good Luck with today’s part of the tour! A great initiative supporting smaller UK Businesses’

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I have the utmost admiration for the millions of people who run a small business in this country.

“They are making an enormous contribution to our economic recovery and their hard work and commitment embodies all that is great about the UK. Small Business Saturday is a vital reminder that we need to celebrate small businesses not just on one day, but all year round.”

Michelle Ovens, the national campaign director, explained: “Our bus tour last year was a very visible way of bringing Small Business Saturday to centres around the UK and was instrumental in drumming up interest, support and enthusiasm. We are visiting even more places this year and hope small business owners and consumers will visit the bus to get information and find out ways in which they can support small businesses and make the day work most effectively for companies in their own communities.’’
