Accolades for Douglas Academy whizz-kids

YOUNG Enterprise group Spark from Douglas Academy won two awards at the recent Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) presentation at Stathclyde University recently.

One the awards was for having the Best Trade Fair stand and the other was The University of Strathclyde Award for the Best Marketing Strategy.

Entrepreneurial school pupils from across Dunbartonshire and Helensburgh have been battling it out to be named the area’s top young entrepreneurs.

The Right Company of Dumbarton Academy won the overall top award from Bearsden financial services company Campbell Dallas.

Ten teams registered at the start of the competition in September 2012, and four made it through to the finals evening.

Chairman of the YES Dunbartonshire Board, Jack Rudram said: “Each year the young people of the Dunbartonshire area never fail to surprise us with their creativity and ingenuity, as well as providing an impressive display of hard work and commitment.

“The standards they set themselves are extremely high and this year was no exception. All the leading teams had excellent products, good business plans and tremendous determination to making their companies a success. What they have gained from the experience will serve them well in the future, whatever walk of life they choose.”

The Young Enterprise Company Programme, which has run for 40 years, inspires young people aged 16 to 18 to test out their business ideas by setting up and running their own company in schools over the course of an academic year. They elect a board of directors, raise share capital, produce and market a product or service of their own choice and gain valuable experience of all aspects of business operations.

At the end of the year they liquidate the company and present a report and a short presentation to their peers and guests at the Dunbartonshire Final Review and Awards Evening.
