£2,000 cash awards for new book writers

THE Scottish Book Trust has announced that applications for the New Writers Awards 2011/12 are now open.

Eight new, unpublished writers will be given financial support through the scheme to enable them to concentrate on their work, as well as professional guidance to move towards publication.

The recipients will each receive a cash award of £2,000 as well as the chance to work with a mentor and networking opportunities with publishers and literary agents.

Applications for the New Writers Awards are open to Scotland-based writers who have not published a novel, short story or poetry collection and have a strong commitment to developing a career in writing. Published writers can apply for the Mentoring Scheme, which equates to nine months of intensive support from another writer or industry professional.
