Bearsden care home team are a tour de force to help foodbank

The team at Bearsden care home, Antonine House, is raising money for a nearby foodbank by collectively cycling the distance of the Tour De France.

Care staff have been pedalling over 2,000 miles on the exercise bike to fundraise for the Drumchapel Foodbank. The care home has set a target of £1,000, which will be used to support local families. so far, more than £700 has been raised.

Dozens of team members at the Roman Road care home, which is run by Meallmore, have been racking up the miles in 15-minute stints during physical-distanced rest breaks from their shifts.

Participants, including care assistants, nurses, housekeepers, catering staff, activities coordinators the management team and more, are using an app to record the miles they cycle.

The idea came from activities coordinator, Samantha Dougan, who regularly organises fundraising events at the care home.

She said: “I am so proud of my colleagues who have taken on this challenge to cycle thousands of miles. During the last four months the local community have been so kind, encouraging and supportive to our care home, and this is our way of giving back.”

Bobby Dougan, care home manager at Antonine House, said: “The foodbank is a vital service for our area. I’m so proud of the team who are volunteering their spare time to give back to support local families.”

The challenge coincided with the date the Tour De France, which was originally due to start on June 29.
