Aldi has sights set on new store at Kirkintilloch

Supermarket chain Aldi has announced plans for a new store in Kirkintilloch and wants people to provide
their opinions.

The company, which was recently refused planning permission for a store in Bishopbriggs, has set its sights on a location next to Initiative Road.

It has launched a website with information about its plans and will carry out an online consultation in January before formally applying for planning permission from East Dunbartonshire Council.

The new website can be found at www.aldiconsultation.co.uk/kirkintilloch while the live consultation event will take place between 6pm and 8pm on Monday, January 11.

Company representatives will answer questions and receive feedback from online participants and this consultation will be open until January 22.

The planned store, which would be the company’s third in East Dunbartonshire, would create up to 35 jobs. It would primarily be serving shoppers in Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Woodilee.

Aldi’s managing director for Scotland, Richard Holloway, said: “This marks an exciting time as we bring forward plans for another store in East Dunbartonshire.

“East Dunbartonshire is a key area of growth for Aldi and I am delighted to be able to present our plans to the local community and bring our award-winning products to Kirkintilloch and the surrounding area.

“We are regularly contacted by the local community to request that we consider opening a store in the area and we are pleased to now be able to progress this.

“The store will help rejuvenate a former industrial site and create up to 35 full and part-time job opportunities within the town.

“We are disappointed that we cannot personally welcome everyone to a public exhibition given the current circumstances, but we welcome the opportunity to receive feedback from local residents and other interested parties through our online consultation which we will announce details of in the new year.”

Once this consultation is concluded Aldi intends to apply for planning permission in late January, and if this is approved the store could open in late 2022.
