SMASH HIT . . . young tennis ace Kafui Akpo-Young started the tennis season as he means to go on when he won the long established prestigious Craighelen Title

The gifted junior player who was competing in the U12 Boys’ Singles at the Easter tournament in Helensburgh, reached the final after beating Aidan McHugh, from Thorn Park, Ewan Sutherland, from David Lloyd, and Scott Docherty from Strathgryffe.

In the final, the Bearsden Tennis Club junior played Alexander Wilson, also from Strathgryffe, winning the first set 6-4.

But Alexander came back to take the second 6-3 which set the plucky young lad up for a tense final. In the deciding match tie Kafui (12) kept his nerve and was rewarded with a 10-7 victory.

This is his best achievement to date although he has had good wins in Winter County Tournaments and has played representative matches for the West of Scotland junior squad.

John Beeley, the club’s junior convener, said: “Kafui plans to make the most of his remaining months in the 12 and under age group but also to establish his ranking in older age group events.”
