WESTERN Wildcats continued their good form with a 3-0 win over Hillhead on Tuesday in the Subway Eatfresh National Hockey League.
The Auchenhowie lads started the game with purpose and intent. However, it was the visitors who created the better chances in the first half.
Scott McCartney came close to opening the scoring but his flick was saved by the Hillhead goalkeeper. Captain Dougie Simpson picked up the ball in the right hand channel and drove the baseline but unfortunately his flick went over the crossbar. Hillhead did manage to split the Wildcats’ defence, playing three direct passes through the midfield to their forwards, but a combination of poor control and great positional awareness from Gavin Sommerville ensured that the game was scoreless at half time.
WIldcats once again started with purpose and intent and with six minutes gone in the second half they were awarded a short corner, much to the delight of McCartney as his flick was a like a rocket as it flew into the net. Western, with the advantage, took control and asserted themselves.
Simpson had a reverse stick shot just wide of the target. Once again the Wildcats captain, leading by example, picked up some interceptions from the Hillhead defence to set up a couple of attacks on goal, but to no avail on these two separate occasions.
In defence Calum Grant made some timely tackles and linked up well with right back Ross Clunie who played some delightful passes down the right channel. Nial Sommerville had a shot on goal as did Calum Grant. Simpson won his team a short corner and once again it was McCartney whom rifled in his second unstoppable flick into the top corner of the goal.
It proved to be his night as he did again with a magnificent flick to secure another victory for the Wildcats.
