Wildcats put in a dogged performance amid dreadfully wet conditions to kept their winning run going at Auchenhowie on Saturday.
Goals came from Scott McCartney, Niall Sommerville and Douglas Simpson. The testing encounter was made worse by the torrential downpour which resulted in a match that was as much about character as anything else. Credit where credit was due in that the team dug deep to find the guts to fight it out when the going got tough.
Apart from McCartney’s obligatory strike the match signalled a welcome return to form for Simpson who has endured a dismal run of injuries.
He said: “It’s safe to say that I’ve not been great this season, but hopefully this is the end of my troubles and I can get amongst the goals again.
“McCartney is always the barometer for how your season is going goal-wise and a few years ago I was keeping pace but a variety of factors have meant that has not been the case in the last couple of seasons.”
Ex-Western midfielder and now coach of Edinburgh University, Graham Moodie, said: “Western are a good team and, as always, will challenge for honours but they need to tighten up at the back and avoid giving away the sloppy goals they conceded to us today.”
