West played Ardrossan for the second time in consecutive weeks - this time in the cup - and unlike the previous week, beat them 29-17.
It was a bright sunny day on the coast in this RBS West Regional 2 Cup Pool game with West started brightly. But Ardrossan scored an early try when centre J. McKee found a hole in the West defence. The try was unconverted to make it 5-0.
West did not take this lying down and spent the rest of the first half pressing Ardrossan hard.
A penalty for a scrum offence was converted by Blair Smith to make it 5-3. There then followed 10 solid minutes in the Ardrossan half, with West attack after West attack nearly scoring but a combination of passes not going to hand and a very good Ardrossan defence kept the score as it was.
Leask Carnegie ran for the corner only to be bundled into touch, Andy Ritchie had a surging run to near the line but the final pass didn’t go to hand, and a West driving maul went 10m before a last ditch Ardrossan tackle kept West at bay.
Finally, a sweeping move found Scott Hunter pierce the Ardrossan defence and pass for Angus Thomson to score.
Blair Smith converted to make it 5-10. Ardrossan came back strongly but despite winning a penalty, West held out until half time.
The second half started with West winning a penalty 45m out. Blair Smith was kicking very smoothly and was successful to make it 5-13. Then winger Fintan Cuthbertson had an excellent run from out to in to score under the posts. Blair Smith did the honours again to make it 5-20.
Ardrossan then won a penalty for a high tackle, took a tap and gained another 10m for not retreating.
Their forwards powered over for a score from the resulting tap penalty. The score was unconverted to make it 10-20. West then won a penalty for offside which Blair Smith again scored to make it 10-23 Ardrossan at that stage made wholesale substitutes including a very fast and powerful winger who did not wait long before outpacing the West defence to score. This one was converted to narrow the scores to 17-23. West won another scrum penalty, Blair Smith extending the lead to 17-26
Ardrossan pressed hard and this time it was West’s turn for desperate defence. West successfully defended an Ardrossan scrum 5 and some excellent clearance kicking saw them in Ardrossan’s half near the end of the match.
Ardrossan were again found to be offside and Blair Smith finished an excellent day with the boot right at the end to make the final score 17-29.
West now face near neighbours Hillhead/Jordanhill in the decider of this cup pool on December 7 at Burnbrae, when it will be all to play for.
