WEST’S head coach Ewan Smith had reasons to be cheerful after the Burnbrae squad picked up a bonus point win at home against a stuffy Dalziel, but warned this Saturday’s Regional Cup home game against Hamilton is going to be tough.
He said: “In almost all games this season West have created an abundance of scoring opportunities and last Saturday we managed to convert four of these. All in all, it was a pleasing, committed display.
“It was great to see the smiles back on the boys’ faces and this can only bode well for this weekend.
“The squad has had a tough time of it lately, but they have continued to put the effort in at training and got their just rewards last Saturday.”
Smith hopes to build on this win against Hamilton, who sit top of the group with two wins from two cup games.
He said: “Playing them will be an entirely different proposition as they play their league rugby in the division above us.
“Hamilton will be a very tough game.
“They may be near the bottom of their league, but their results show that they are more than capable of scoring plenty of points. Our focus this week will be on doing the basics well, along with a wee bit of extra work on our defence.
“It will be good to test ourselves against opposition from a higher league to see how we compare.
“Our squad will again be very similar to the last few weeks, which will only help, as not getting a consistent team out onto the pitch every week has undoubtedly contributed to our recent poor run.”
This Saturday’s game kicks off at Burnbrae at 1pm.
