After a nine try thrilling game West now sit fifth in the league following this narrow exciting victory for West.

West then scored the best try of the match when a neat wraparound between Alex Fisken and Mark Jenkinson found Mark Sim on the wing who rounded the defence to score under the posts. Smith again converted. The lead was extended with a driving maul up to the Perthshire line, with Mark Jenkinson peeling off to touch down. Smith was again on the mark with the conversion.

Perthshire’s Rory McKay then found a gap in the West defence to score a try with no 8 Duncan Clow’s conversion making it 24-7. West responded when Ross McAulay broke through the Perthshire defence and passed to Mark Sim who touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed but West notching up the bonus point. Perthshire then made the score more respectable when just before half time they took a tap penalty, moved the ball through several phases and Duncan Clow found a gap in the defence to score, converting his own try to make it 29-14 at the break.

After half time, Perthshire came out with increased pace and scored quickly. They spread the ball wide from a lineout and their full back came through the middle to touch down, and after the conversion the gap had narrowed to 29-21. Smith then hit the post with a penalty for West. Perthshire then scored with a penalty and Smith succeeded with a penalty to move the score on to 32-24.

Perthshire then notched up their own try bonus when Andy Whitelaw found a big gap in the West defence to score.

With a 32-31 score after the conversion there was everything to play for. Perthshire’s clearance was run back by West, with Alex Fisken running cleverly past the face of the defence and setting up Leask Carnegie for the winning try. Smith converted to give the home side victory.
