ON Saturday West face Falkirk at Burnbrae for the start of round two of Championship A’s fixtures.
In the first game of the season West lost out narrowly to a well organised Falkirk team who are now second in the league. West currently sit third bottom after losing out to Dumfries last weekend.
Looking forward to this week’s encounter head coach Ewan Smith, said: “Against Falkirk in the first game of the season we conceded some very soft tries and didn’t capitalise on the pressure we exerted on them . . . unfortunately that has been the story of our season to date and that is why we are near the bottom of the league with only two wins from nine games.”
“We’ve also used 36 different players so far this season so there is no doubt that has contributed to the differing levels of performances that have been produced - but we can’t use that as an excuse as in all but one of our games we have been in a position to win it.”
Despite a disappointing run Smith said Saturday’s game would give them an opportunity to put things right, adding, “I’m looking forward to Falkirk coming to Burnbrae this weekend. It gives us a chance to put things right after the opening day defeat. Four players made their 1st XV debut last week and acquitted themselves pretty well and they will be in the fold to retain their places this week but we will have several other players available to us who have been out injured or who have been away working. This will only strengthen the squad.”
The message Smith will want to put across to the squad this week to that they must step up to the mark and take responsibility for their actions on the pitch.
He added: “Poor decision making in attack, especially when we are in behind them has cost us numerous scoring opportunities. If we are to start climbing the table we need to take these opportunities and we need to start now.”
As many supporters as possible have been asked to come along and cheer the team on. Kick-off is 3pm.
