Milngavie Wanderers 2
Airdrie United 1
GADYFL League Cup
Milngavie Wanderers retained their League Cup crown with a hard fought game at a packed Clydebank High School.
It was their third consecutive success in the competition and along with their three league titles, means they have now won all six GADYFL trophies in the last three years.
Airdrie started with most attacking vigour and almost went ahead only eleven minutes in when Jordan McAlleese found himself through on goal but Daniel Hall stood his ground well and was able to make the save. Milngavie struggling to get into their usual rhythm but were spurred into action shortly before the break when Airdrie went down to 10 men after a stamp on Scott Clark. Milngavie tried to take advantage of this but a James MacMillan shot to Clark was cleared off the line by a defender.
Milngavie came out fighting in the second half, but they were still finding clear cut chances hard to come by. That changed in the 48th minutes when substitute Grant McGhee’s attempted cross from the right veered goal-ward, leaving Airdrie keeper Tony Sharky clutching at fresh air as it cannoned off the bar. From there it fell to Aran McDonald whose shot was diverted into the net by James Macmillan, sparking jubilation from the Milngavie players and supporters.
Ross Elliot then tried his luck on the hour mark having forayed forward from left back but he delayed his shot and it was an easy save for Sharky - although the lead was eventually doubled five minutes later when Aran McDonald thumped the ball home.
Milngavie had one hand on the trophy but they were assured of a nervy finish as Airdrie pulled a goal back in the final minute of regulation time.
