Shooting ace on target for Delhi
A SHARP shooter has been selected for this year's Commonwealth Games, which kicks of in the Indian city of Delhi next month.
This will be the third time Alan Ritchie (37) has represented his country at the games in the individual and pair events in the 10 metre air pistol and 50 metre cartridge pistol sections.
The gas services engineer, who has been a member of Bearsden Rifle and Pistol club for close to eight years, revealed he was aiming to at least qualify of the finals in both events at the Games, which run from October 3-14.
Speaking to Herald Sport, Alan said: "I'll go there with a bit of a fire in my belly.
"The Melbourne Games in 2006 were great. In the 10 metres air pistol pairs I was placed eighth, and in the 50 metre section I came ninth in the individuals and fifth in the pairs."
In the 2002 Games in Manchester, Allan finished outside the top 10 in both disciplines but said he still enjoyed the event as all his family were able to join him.
Commenting on being picked for Delhi, Alan added: "I am just over the moon and so proud to be representing Scotland yet again."
This will be the 19th games and the largest multi-sport event held in Delhi.
It is also the first time India has hosted the event and only the second time the spectacle has been held in Asia, following the 1998 games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Gearing up for the challenge, Alan, who lives in Johnstone, said: "I believe the Commonwealth Games this year will be a good stepping stone to the Olympics.
"It will also be great for my chances of competing in the Games when they come to Glasgow in four years time."
Showing their support, members of the Bearsden club recently had a whip round and raised 200 to help Alan with his training costs.
Club president Gordon Campbell presented Alan with the cheque recently and added: "He is an inspiration for all young persons who wish to compete at the highest level.
"We all wish him the best of luck when he travels to Delhi."
