DOUGLAS Academy’s girls have won the Scottish Schools Shinty Cup.
The six a side competition was played at Ardnamurchan High School in Strontian and the Milngavie team qualified first from their section without losing a goal.
Hosts Ardnamurchan also made it out of this section to play the semi-finals against the qualifiers from the other section.
Lochaber High School and Kinlochleven High School qualified from the other section and since these teams were the winners from the previous two year’s competitions, on paper they looked the more likely to progress to the final.
However, after two very tight semi-finals which both went to extra time, Douglas beat Kinlochleven 1-0 and Ardnamurchan beat pre-tournament favourites Lochaber 1-0 on penalties.
The final was a real battle between two committed teams and although Douglas had the best of the game a long range strike from centre Rachael McCafferty was the only goal so the final result was never assured.
All the girls playing have come through the ranks of Milngavie & Bearsden Juniors and now play for Glasgow Mid Argyll (GMA) ladies senior team.
Leonie Traynor who is only in second year also still plays for M&B juniors under 14 team who this Sunday have a final game show down with Oban Camanachd to decide the destination of the South of Scotland Under 14 League title.
M&B juniors are keen to continue developing shinty in the area and would encourage any primary aged boys and girls interested in trying the sport to come along to the winter development training sessions on Friday nights at Douglas Academy. P5 and under is from 6.30 -7.30pm and P6 and P7s from 7.30-8.30pm.
