Partick Thistle take on Clyde in the Challenge Cup

PARTICK Thistle are back to full match sharpness according to assistant manager Ian Maxwell.

Following a number of friendly matches in the run-up to the start of the new season, Maxwell said that despite a couple of niggles, the squad was ready for the first competitive match of the new season with a home clash against Clyde tomorrow (Saturday) in the Challenge Cup.

Maxwell, who was appointed assistant manager a couple of weeks ago, will still play as a defender, but in his new role he will have a far greater say in the decisions that will be crucial to success.

Commenting on last Saturday's closed-doors match when they drew 1-1 against a young Celtic team, he said: "I am very pleased with how the team are progressing. The match against Celtic was a good game for us although we should have won. We had the better play in the first half with most of the chances."

Thistle took the lead against Celtic, who equalised in the second half when John Robertson sliced a Ryan Conroy cross past Bryn Halliwell and into his own net.

Despite this, 35-year-old Maxwell remains confident that the squad can put in a convincing performance tomorrow.

Maxwell said: "Alan Archibald is still out, probably until September, and Jackie McNamara is also not going to be available for tomorrow's game. I reckon he'll be out until at least August. However, we have a good team and they are match sharp now."

With the players now back to full fitness, the assistant gaffer added the match against Clyde would be a good test of the squad.

The league season kicks-off for Thistle with an away game against Raith Rovers on Saturday, August 7.
