Partick Thistle's Maxwell weighs up his options

PARTICK THISTLE defender Ian Maxwell is weighing up his options at Firhill after interest was shown in him by Livingston.

The popular player was disappointed not to have his role as player/assistant manager agreed at a board meeting last week and is now unsure what the future holds for him at the cash-strapped club.

Maxwell (35) told Herald Sport he was keen to continue with the Jags next season but would be keeping his options open and see what was on the table over the next couple of weeks.

He said: "It is a bit up in the air at the moment. I don't think Ian McCall is in a position to offer me anything at the moment because there is no money in the budget."

And on the interest from Livingston, he added: "I have not had any direct approach from them but understand they want me as a player only. I'd love to stay at Thistle, but if it's not going to happen, it's not going to happen."

Although the veteran finished the season strongly on the pitch at Firhill, he has been keen to move into a management role since taking over from number two Davie Irons back in February.

Interest has also been shown in the big defender by Ayr United gaffer Brian Reid, following their relegation to the second Division which has forced him to completely re-build his squad.

With such an uncertain time ahead of him the former St Mirren and St Johnstone centre-back is hoping the interest in him will strengthen his bargaining hand, but Maxwell understands the limitations McCall is working with, adding: "we'll just have to wait and see."

Last season the defender made 31 appearances for the top team and his temporary time as coach has seen him make a very positive impact on young up-and-coming stars, such as centre-back Ross McGeough.
