Partick Thistle statisfied despite final day loss
PARTICK Thistle ended a generally successful season on a disappointing note on Saturday.
The Jags slumped to a 4-0 defeat to Dundee as the rigours of a long and arduous campaign hit home.
However, despite the loss, Thistle finish the season a creditable second in the league, having kept champions St Johnstone in sight in a dogged chase till the last few fixtures.
Limited resources and injuries meant that the team punched well above their weight for much of the campaign, and they well exceeded their pre-season target of a top-five finish.
Fans will hope that this will provide the basis for a fresh challenge next time, and last week in Herald Sport, goalkeeper Jonny Tuffy pleaded with the Firhill board to open the purse strings to allow manager Ian McCall to make some new signings.
The Northern Ireland international — the club's young player of the year – said: "We did really well this season, but we didn't have a lot of depth to the squad and that hampered us when we began to pick up injuries.
"It's a good team we have here and hopefully next term the board will get behind the manager and give him a few quid to spend to bring in some new faces."
McCall conceded that the Dundee match was a deflating end to a decent season.
He said: "Dundee look like they will be the team to beat next term, with the players they are going to bring in.
"But I thought we dominated large chunk of the game. It is a very disappointing way to go out after what has been a good season for us."
