Opposition prove too strong for Allander squash teams

The Allander Cyan 1st team squash recently played Whitecraigs top team at home and it proved to be a difficult match which saw Allander lose 3-2.

Playing at 5, Gregory Dudziak started the evening well with a steady 3-1 victory over a fast hitting youthful opponent. At number 4 Ken Findlay had a less successful match, playing unforced errors against an accurate adversary, losing 3-1 on the night.

At 3 Phil Graves created many chances during a long active five set match, reaching a seemingly commanding 2-1 lead, only to lose the next two games defeated by superior pace and narrowing losing 3-2 overall.

At number 2 Jez Bushell played a skilled opponent in his mid sixties, who countered and kept a close control of the early part to the match. Jez settled in for the long haul, wore his opponent and eventually won the fifth game at 17-15 for a 3-2 victory.

Concluding the match at number 1, Chris McGready played an exciting match against a highly skilled veteran player who matched Chris for pace, drops and accuracy. The match went to 4 sets with Chris eventually losing the last game, which was disappointing as superior fitness would have given him the legs to win the fifth, rather than losing 3-1. This gave the final score of 15:10 to Whitecraigs.

Meanwhile 3 divisions lower in the 6th division, Allander Cyan 2nd team was away, taking on the Whitecraigs 3rd team.

At number 5 Norrie Aitchison was run off his feet by a much younger and faster opponent and succumbed 3-0. Hamish McKay had a similar result at number 4, again losing 3-0. Gordon Gray, at 3, managed to get a game but likewise was up against a strong player and lost 3-1.

Kevin Reilly came close to clawing back a second game to make it 2-2, but just lost the fourth game to go down 3-1. Finally Donnie Kneale put some pride into the team with a very spirited fightback from 2-0 down to level the scores, only to lose by a hair’s breadth in the last game and a fifth defeat on the night. This result means the team’s undefeated record no longer stands.
