West of Scotland have put themselves on course to clinch promotion to the National League Division 2 at the end of the season.

The Burnbrae club moved into second place in the Division 3 table thanks to a hard-fought 8-3 win at Dalziel.

West leapfrogged rivals Haddington - who lost 14-12 at Orkney.

And although runaway leaders GHK look uncatchable, the Milngavie club are in pole position to take the second promotion spot.

It’s likely to be a three-way fight between West, Haddington and Dumfries Saints. West and Haddington are on the same points, West having two games in hand, but Dumfries are just two points adrift having played a game less than West and three fewer than Haddington.

West still have to play both their rivals and also face a daunting trip to GHK in their final fixture.

They travelled to Motherwell on Saturday knowing that, while the league table suggested it would be an easy game again a side sitting third bottom, experience over the last three years suggested otherwise.

Dalziel know West well and the games are nearly always close - and so it proved again with just a single try from Mark Jenkinson separating the sides after they had traded penalties.
