Milngavie Tennis Club’s Over 60 men’s doubles team has had a great season so far.

They recently retaining the West of Scotland league trophy for the third successive season. Several of the squad also contributed to the four man team who has won the league each year since the competition was started in 2011.

One of the squad Hunter Reid, said: “Avoiding injury and illness seemed to be the key factor to success with the importance of skill a close second to fitness.

“The results in 2013 were spectacular with 42 sets for and none against in the seven matches played. In one match the team incredibly managed to win every game in the match - that is 36 games to 0 - surely a record in any of the divisions in the West of Scotland Tennis Leagues?”

The successful squad were captain Ian Swann, Alistair Dickson, Jim Hastie, Laurie McNamee, Hunter Reid, Dave Sillars and Willie Taylor.

Four of the team, Hunter Reid, Ian Swann, Jim Hastie and David Sillars have just returned from playing in Italy for the Glasgow Wide Boys team that toured Tuscany for the 13th consecutive year.

The Wide Boys Veterans team, captained by Hunter, draws most of it players from the Milngavie Club but also features former local players who have moved away from Glasgow. Many of the team play tennis at county level for their age group and several have won Scottish titles or have played for Scotland. One of the team, former Milngavie star and Scottish Internationalist Russell Howat, recently reached the final of the over 55’s British Hard Court Championships at Bournemouth.

The team of nine players, who’s base camp is in the beautiful village of Pieve di Compito near Lucca, this year played four matches in Montecatini, Florence, Marina di Massa and Lido di Camiore winning three and drawing one match.
