BEARSDEN’S Kathleen Castell and her rowing partner Helena Davison scooped gold at the British Rowing Championships in Nottingham.
The 15-year-old Boclair Academy pupil picked up the first place in the Girls’ Under 15 Double Sculls on Sunday.
From an initial field of 22 crews, HellKat - as the duo have become known - put a marker down straightaway, winning their qualifying heat to gain a place in the semi final and going on to set fastest time across all the semi finals.
In the final the Glasgow Rowing Club pair took the lead convincingly by over seconds at 500 metres and rowed strongly down the 2000 metre course extending the lead to win by 10.04 seconds from Reading Rowing Club, who just held onto second by 0.92 sec from Ross Rowing Club.
Their coach for the past two years Alistair Browne said after their most recent win: “Success in sport needs a lot of work; you can have the basics of technique and physique, but if you don’t have the desire to apply yourself and do the hard work all year round, you won’t win your big events. What makes my job such a pleasure with Kathleen and Helena is their dedication to their sport. They have worked on this success for more than a year; they train hard all week every week and they work all the time at being better. They are the 2012 British Champions because they earned it.”
CHAMPIONS . . . Kathleen and Helena.
