A BEARSDEN rower was just over a boat’s length away from winning gold when she competed in the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships at Heriot Watt uni recently.
Boclair Academy student Kathleen Castell (15) won bronze covering 1,275 metre in the event which was limited to five minutes. Second was Iona Peason who covered 1,280 metres with the winner, Helen Clemenson, covering 1,286 metre.
Despite coming third in the U16 race the Glasgow Rowing Club member was delighted with her performance on the rowing machine competition. She was only 11 metres behind the winner, which was quite close considering the boats they use in the outdoor competitions are eight metres long. Last year Kathleen came sixth.
Kathleen said: “I was really happy to have beaten many of the rowers I was up against last year. This is an excellent start to the new season for me.”
Meanwhile in the Men’s Vet 60+ category, where competitors raced over 1km, Bryan Stewart from Milngavie took the silver medal in a time of 3mins 30.9secs.
Fellow Milngavie rower Gill Thayne (14) - competing for the first time - finished a credible 13th out of 24 competitors in the Girl’s U15 event. She also set a personal best distance of 939m in the 4mins race.
Gill started rowing last summer, after seeing a feature in the Milngavie and Bearsden Herald about the Scottish Rowing Championships held in June last year.
