MacAulay defeats son in all-Bearsden men’s final

The mens’ final at this year’s Bearsden Lawn Tennis Club provided a close-knit battle between father and son.

Both Bearsden club teams made it through to the last round, in what was the 38th Invitation Tournament.

After wins against Lenzie and Bishopbriggs, the top team of Ian MacAulay and Gordon Wilson secured their place in the showpiece.

However, the Bearsden second team — made up of Euan Proud and Ian’s son Scott — edged out both Broomhill and Milngavie to set up a unique father-son showdown.

In the end, experience proved key as Ian and Gordon ran out 6-4 winners against the younger duo Euan and Scott.

Meanwhile, Bearsden also secured the ladies’ doubles title as Emma Wright and Joanne Quirk beat the Clarkston team of Jenny Hunter and Jennifer Hahn 6-2.

Emma and Joanne had reached the final following a close 7-6 win against Craighelen in the semi final.

Teams that lost their first round match played through to a consolation final against staff from the University of Glasgow.

In the mens’ doubles, Dan Lockyer and Hugh Shields won the title after being Clarkston’s William Steven and Craig Beaton.

The ladies’ winners were Genevive Stapleton and Elaine Clark from Glasgow University who beat Lenzie’s Audrey Wright and Mandy Thomson.

Trophies were presented by club secretary Andy
Gordon.
