Lost opportunities cost Wildcats hockey team dearly

Grange Hockey Club 1st team 4

Western Wildcats Hockey Club 1st team 1

This was a game where Western promised much but delivered so little and they will be cursing the missed opportunites after travelled over to Edinburgh for this fiercely contested clash.

Grange opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Western failed to clear the danger and the loose ball was squared across goal before being fired into an empty net.

Western threatened at the other end with several penalty corners, but failed to find their rhythm going into the half time 1-0 behind.

The second half brought more Western pressure but they failed to close the door at the other end and Grange were next on the score sheet with Cammy Fraser scoring a lovely reverse stick to go 2-0 up.

Western rallied and within a few minutes had clawed themselves back into the match courtesy of a well deserved goal from new signing Andrew Sinclair, who is supreme in midfield. With the visitors attacking the opposition goal it seemed like another goal was imminent, bur a combination of wasteful finishing and some handy goalkeeping from Hadfield kept them at bay.

Two late strikes for Grange put the result beyond doubt and Western were left to rue their profligacy in front of goal.

With a view to the upcoming Friday Night Lights match against Clydesdale, Vice Captain Gary Maitles said: “It wasn’t the result we wanted or felt we deserved. Importantly, it is just one game. We are playing very well so need to re-focus and get ready for a big game on Friday Night.
