Keeper Tuffey leads player exodus from Partick Thistle

PARTICK Thistle goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey remained tight-lipped this week about his future plans after it was announced that the Northern Ireland internationalist is to leave the club.

Speaking to Herald Sport, the 23-year-old said he had really enjoyed his four seasons at Firhill but felt, with his contract expiring in May, it was time to look towards building his career.

There have been a number of rumours about clubs monitoring Tuffey's progress, with Rangers among his reputed admirers.

Interest has also been show by Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Hearts and Derby County.

Tuffey has blossomed into a real asset for the club and become a fans' favourite after taking over from Kenny Arthur, who departed at the end of 2006-7 season.

The keeper has refused to be drawn on his plans at this stage but did admitted he was delighted to finish the last game of the season with a clean sheet following Saturday's 1-0 win over Queen of the South at Firhill.

He said: "I am just sitting here and hoping for the phone to ring. There are a few things in the pipeline, but it's just a waiting game at the moment."

And paying tribute to the Firhill outfit, the ex-Coventry City player added: "It has been absolutely fantastic. In the four seasons I've had a really good time.

"I cannot thank the players, staff or fans enough. It is a great club, but it is time to move on. I have to do what is right for my career."

One of the highlights of Tuffey's career came in March 2008 when he won the First Division Player of the Month award.

Thistle remained unbeaten throughout that month, and claimed a memorable 1-1 draw against Rangers.

A club spokesperson said: "Everyone is absolutely gutted to see John go.

"He has been a massive part of the team over the last four seasons here. He put his heart and soul into the club. We wish him all the best."

Tuffey's departure will coincide with a spring clear out at Firhill as manager Ian McCall looks to revamp his often under-performing team.

Among those who have been told they will not have their contracts extended are former Celtic star Simon Donnelly, Martyn Corrigan, Bryn Halliwell, Craig Hinchcliffe, Ian Maxwell and Scott Tully, while Ryan Conroy will return to Celtic after the end of his loan period at Firhill.

McCall said: "I would like to thank all those players for their efforts during their time at Partick Thistle."

The Jags boss also revealed there could be further departures from the club.

He added "Both Paddy Boyle and Mark Corcoran, although contracted for next season, have been told that they are free to find other clubs."
